Shift/Schedule: Full-time
JOB PURPOSE:
Responsible for handling the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the obstetrical operations performed in the Operating Room located in the Labor and Delivery unit. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. Performs patient care duties under the direction of a registered nurse.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
High School diploma or GED equivalent.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Graduate from a Surgical Technologist training program OR has one–year previous operating room experience as a Surgical/Delivery Room Technologist OR three years of experience providing direct patient care in a clinical setting.
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:
BLS required.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
NRP is preferred.
Preferred completion of a fetal monitoring workshop and an orientation to learn surgical asepsis.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Functions as a member of the surgical team in the role of scrub person.
a. Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure which includes review and utilization of appropriate preference card.
b. Assists with room set-up to include opening of sterile supplies.
c. Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medication/solutions needed for procedure.
d. Performs appropriate surgical counts with circulator.
e. Actively participates in the procedure pause/time-out.
f. Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
g. Assists in draping sterile field.
h. Passes instruments to surgeon during the procedure.
i. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
j. Prepares sterile dressings.
k. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
2. Functions as a member of the surgical team in partnership with licensed staff.
a. Facilitates continuity of procedure by anticipating the surgeon’s needs and through handoff communication when relieved for break or permanent relief.
b. Observes patient’s condition and immediately reports any changes or significant findings to the physician and Registered Nurse.
c. Serves as patient advocate including patient care and safety.
d. Supports licensed staff as requested by utilizing skills and equipment in which he/she is competent.
e. Prep rooms with appropriate instrument supplies and have standard OR equipment available in working order.
f. Clean and restock the operating room after surgery is completed and patient is transferred to the recovery area
g. Assists in prepping the operating room for the next patient.
h. Assists in transporting patients.
3. Performs patient care duties in Labor and Delivery under the direction of a registered nurse.
a. Supports licensed staff by performing treatments or procedures as delegated and only those which he/she is competent and in a safe, accurate and timely manner; this includes clipping, prepping surgical site, and positioning of patient.
b. Appropriately modifies the approach to patients when performing specific procedures/tasks.
c. Use appropriate equipment and resources when performing procedures and providing information.
d. Provides comfort and safety measures for the patient.
4. Performs other essential duties.
a. Prepares case carts according to procedure and preference cards.
a. Orders supplies and linen for Labor & Delivery.
b. Serves as willing, cooperative, informative, supportive guide for new employees
c. Remain competent knowledge in area(s) of surgical aseptic technique, perioperative procedures in Labor & Delivery, surgical scrub for C-sections, D&Cs, and vaginal deliveries.
