Description

Responsibilities

Schedules and pre-certifies diagnostic tests and procedures. Responsible for verifying insurance, calculating the amount owed by the patient, setting up loan repayment plans, and providing the patient with any billing information needed. Coordinates and implements clerical functions. Accurately and efficiently fulfilling these duties has a major impact on direct patient care and accurate billing. Serves as liaison between patients, staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. Must keep abreast of scheduled workload at all times and be able to set priorities. Performs reception, scheduling, order entry by transcription, and other general clerical duties which support a department-based multidisciplinary patient care team. Accountability is measured through performance appraisals, quality of work, productivity, direct observation, Care Line reports, Incident/QARM reports, physician feedback, and peer review.

Emergency Room Access Coordinator: A fast paced area where registration takes place at the patient's bedside. Strict EMTALA guidelines in financial data collection and collection of co-pays are followed. Strong teamwork between the clinical staff and the financial staff is required. Strong teamwork, communication and customer service skills are required.

Central Registration Access Coordinator: A fast paced multi-task area with a variety of patient services. An environment which requires face to face patient and family interaction. Strong teamwork, communication and customer service skills are required.

Scheduling and Benefits Access Coordinator: A fast paced, multi task area where the majority of the interaction is spent on the telephone and computer. Eligibility and pre-certifications are completed on all scheduled patients prior to their hospital visit. This is a multi-system area. Strong teamwork, communication and customer service skills are required.

Demonstrates population-specific competencies (e.g. age-specific, cultural sensitivity, patient-centered communication) in performance of role.


Requirements

Education:

High School graduate or GED equivalent required.

Licensure/Certification:

N/A

Experience:

One (1) year exp in one of the following:

1. Healthcare Revenue Cycle

2. Clinical role

3. Related clerical accounting/finance/retail.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Three (3) years of healthcare Revenue Cycle experience preferred. Certification with Healthcare Financial Management Association, or Certified Revenue Cycle Representative preferred. Prior Epic experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Demonstrates sound judgment in considering time constraints, logistical consideration, resource allocations and patient wishes.
  2. Basic knowledge of growth and development relevant to the ages of the patients served.
  3. Basic knowledge of the diseases and health care needs of the patient population served.
  4. Multiple tasks and responsibilities. Must pay attention to detail. Ability to perform efficiently and effectively under stress.
  5. High level of professionalism required in appearance and speaking manner. Must recognize importance of privacy and maintain confidentiality at all times.
  6. Ability to work independently.
  7. High level of interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate with patients, families, visitors, team members, physicians, and other hospital personnel with who daily interactions must take place. Communication often requires high level of tact, sensitivity- awareness, and persuasiveness. Clear and concise verbal communication skills required for extensive telephone and personal interactions.
  8. Problem-solving skills sufficient to allow effective problem/conflict resolution.
  9. Demonstrated traits of initiative and dependability required. Philosophy of health care service is compatible with that of the mission of Piedmont Augusta.

Physical Demands:

  • Sight - to read physician orders and other unit documentation.
  • Speech - to communicate with callers and other customers, and respond to intercom system.
  • Auditory - to hear patients and answer telephone.
  • Ability to move throughout the organization and transport patients as needed.
