Shift/Schedule: Full-time
JOB PURPOSE:
Performs phlebotomy procedures in accordance with standard policy and procedure guidelines. Draws blood from patients in a physician’s office/clinic, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assembles equipment such as tourniquet, needles, and disposable containers for needles, blood collection Devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
2. Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
3. Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into appropriate collection tube.
4. Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing.
5. Proficient in finger sticks when applicable.
6. Processes specimens according to test requirements. (i.e. spinning, separation, freezing).
7. Enter test orders and diagnosis codes in computer system.
8. Determine reference lab destination according to patient insurance type.
9. Corrects, sorts, and delivers lab reports to appropriate ordering physician.
10. Follow-up on all pending and missing results as needed
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
One (1) year of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:
None.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Phlebotomy Certificate from a medical training facility along 1 year of clinical experience required.
