Description

JOB PURPOSE:
Under the direction of laboratory management, is responsible for leading all aspects of operation in assigned section/team/department, including preparation and maintenance of records, reports, policies and procedures; analysis of testing methodologies, employee training/staffing, technical oversight, and compliance. Works in collaboration with team members to ensure that tasks, priorities, goals and achievements are coordinated with management. Assist with test validations, regulatory compliance, quality control/assurance, and maintenance within assigned area. Perform a variety of laboratory tests and procedures to assist physicians in diagnosing, monitoring, treating and preventing disease.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Oversees technical operations in laboratory.
2. Determines staffing needs, participates in scheduling and assigning staff accordingly.
3. Provides input towards employee performance evaluations.
4. Ensures instrumentation maintenance is performed and the documentation is completed.
5. Maintains acceptable quality, safety and service levels in assigned area of responsibility.
6. Complies with regulations of all existing applicable state, federal and regulatory agencies.
7. Participate in accreditation activities.
8. Assists in the development and implementation of action plans.
9. Assists in delegating performance of any test requiring more than limited skill and responsibility and exercise of judgments.
10. Responsible for the accuracy of the test results.
11. May help develop and implement quality control programs for laboratory and maintain all quality control reports and documentation.
12. May write and maintain policies and procedures for laboratory section/department.
13. May performs reagent and supply inventory for the section/department and assists in reagent and supply ordering.
14. May validate new test procedures.
15. May assist with training new staff and students and assist in maintaining competency records.
16. Performs clinical laboratory procedures following established procedural guidelines in all.
17. Performs projects/additional tasks and other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
• Must be competent in all assigned areas of the Laboratory. Knowledgeable of department procedures and instrumentation in all applicable areas.
• Must have excellent communication skills with internal and external clients (written and verbal)
• Must have excellent problem solving skills.
• Must be able to organize and coordinate workflow, and to direct and oversee the work of Medical Technologists/technicians, Phlebotomists and Lab Assistants.
• Must have excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to implement policies and procedures.
• High level of decision making skills.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel) and Laboratory/Pathology Information System.
• Ability to work as a member of a team and motivate others
• Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
High School diploma or equivalent required plus a sufficient number of college and/or technical school courses and clinical training to satisfy the requirements for testing and certification as a medical technologist by an approved certifying agency.
MINIMUM EDUCATION PREFERRED:
Bachelor’s Degree in clinical laboratory science, biomedical science, medical technology or in a life / biological science (biology, biochemistry, microbiology, etc.) preferred
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Three (3) years of hospital experience required.
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:
Certification as a medical technologist or medical laboratory scientist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), AMT (American Medical Technologists) or AAB (American Association of Bioanalysts) according to the qualifications through the State of Georgia Department of Community Health, Healthcare Facility, Clinical Laboratory regulations. AAB provisional certification not accepted.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous lead or supervisory experience preferred.
Should be competent in areas of the laboratory being covered, including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, blood bank, microbiology.
Knowledge of CAP, State of Georgia and other regulatory agency guidelines.
Should have experience with human resource/staff development issues, and use independent judgment. Should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, work well with others, possess tact, discretion and diplomacy.
