Job Summary
The Patient Care Tech II will be responsible for assisting in meeting patient needs for all age groups (neonates, infant, children, adolescent, adult, and geriatric) in the areas of comfort, activities of daily living, clinical procedures as delineated, transporting and safety needs, and obtaining blood samples from patients according to established procedures and protocols. The Patient Care Tech II will communicate with team members in a timely manner about his/her observations of the patient's progress, needs and problems. Maintains established departmental/hospital policies, procedures, objectives, Performance Improvement and Patient Safety, and infection control. Works as a member of a unit based, multidisciplinary patient care team. Embraces shared governance nursing organizational principals by being informed of nursing councils’ activities so that outcome, goals and objectives of nursing are achieved.
Accountability will be monitored through direct observations; achievement of team service goals including satisfaction, quality, and financial outcomes; and performance improvement activities. The provision of nursing care will be provided in an environment that embraces maximum participation by the staff.
Demonstrates population-specific competencies (e.g. age-specific, cultural sensitivity, patient-centered communication) in performance of role.
Requirements
Education:
Ability to read, write, perform mathematical calculations, and follow written and verbal instructions. High School diploma/GED required. Related post-high school education preferred. (Examples: Unit Clerk, Medical Secretary, etc. or related course work.)
Must have completed a Nursing Assistance program or have Nursing Assistant experience.
Licensure/Certification:
BLS required.
CNA or Phlebotomy certification preferred.
Experience:
At least one year full-time experience performing phlebotomy functions at Phlebotomy or certification required. Will also consider experience in other allied health professions requiring phlebotomy skills such as: LPHI or II, Paramedic, EMT or Certified Medical Assistant. Experience dealing with public demonstrating excellent customer service skills required.
At least one year experience direct care/lab preferred.
Direct Patient care experience such as Nursing Assistant, Dietetics Representative, Physical Therapy Aide, Phlebotomist, EKG Technician, etc. desired.

Physical Demands
- Standing for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours)
- Walking for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours) to include moving about the work area, hospital and/or campus as needed
- Sitting for extended periods (8 to 12 hours)
- Must be able to bend, stoop and reach/lift above your head
- Sight: must be able to read documentation in a variety of formats such as items in print or electronically. For Health Care Providers (HCP) must be able to visualize patient condition and see data displayed on monitoring devices, etc.
- Auditory: must be able to hear in order to clearly communicate with others and use communication devices such as telephones, must be able to hear patients, alarms, call bells, etc.
- Tactile: must have ability to handle equipment and/or devices related to job duties, enter documentation within computer system. For HCP must be able to feel for pulses, skin temperature, and other patient conditions
- Olfactory: HCP need to be able to smell disease-specific smells
- HCP should not manually lift (including transfer, reposition, or move) patients who weigh greater than 35 pounds. The appropriate safe patient handling device will be used, except in emergency situations (life or death situations where delay in obtaining and using the safe patient handling equipment may be detrimental to the patient). Refer to Policy/Procedure G-89
- Proper body mechanics will be used when moving or lifting any equipment or supplies
Work Environment
Works in an acute care setting with adequate lighting and climate control. May be directly exposed to communicable and infectious diseases, blood, blood products, and body fluids, secretions, and excretions, unpleasant odors, biological and chemical hazards and low level radiation. Safety hazards include sharps, needles and electric shock. May be required to work various shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime hours.
Job Specific Major Areas of Responsibility
* Within scope of practice utilizes knowledge base to assist in meeting patient care needs (ie. comfort and ADL measures) for all age groups. Embraces shared governance nursing organizational principals by keeping informed of shared governance activities and fulfilling job duties that assist the unit to achieve unit goals and objectives. 30%
- Readies room in preparation of patient's arrival; making sure that bed and other equipment are age-appropriate; orients patient to room; provides and explains booklets giving information on hospital and service. Ensures safety equipment, such as BFMs, are working appropriately and turned on when needed.
- Gives direct patient care in a manner that promotes a safe, clean, and comfortable environment in accordance with established guidelines, and appropriate for the age of the patient served. Procedures may include:
- Transports patients in a safe manner on the proper transportation device that is appropriate for patient's age and condition; demonstrates use of proper transfer techniques when moving patients; checks patient identification and band to insure transport of the correct patient.
- Delivers trays and ordered snacks to patient after verifying menu and current recorded diet order. Provide pre-meal hygiene, positions patient, assist with opening containers and feeds patient as necessary. Records intake as appropriate. Removes tray and containers following appropriate procedure.
- Reinforces teaching with the patient/significant other using appropriate resources and appropriate for patient's age.
- Provides hospitality information to families/visitors; assists with visitor control.
* Based on competence credentialing, develops, and maintains cross trainable skills. Utilizes skills to assist with delineated patient procedures using appropriate infection control policies and safety measures. Certified Paramedics and EMTs may initiate IV’s. 30%
- Performs and documents procedures and treatments as ordered and according to practice guidelines and using various pieces of equipment efficiently:
- Performs and documents basic respiratory procedures on patients as prescribed by the physician/plan of care (Care Map). Demonstrates skills in performing procedures and appropriately adapts care to specific age groups (ie. neonate, infant, child, adolescents, adults, geriatric).
- Performs and documents non-skilled physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech procedures as prescribed by the physician/plan of care (Care Map), or appropriate licensed professional. Demonstrates skills in performing procedures and appropriately adapts care to specific age groups (neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric).
- Assists in orienting new staff and peer evaluations.
* Obtains blood samples from patients according to established procedures and protocols, to include ensuring appropriate and timely specimen collection, processing and delivery, and effective communication and reporting of test results. All PCT IIs perform blood glucose testing and PCT IIs who are certified by ASCP or MT as phlebotomists, paramedics, or EMTs may perform ACT testing. Monitors quality control and takes appropriate action as necessary. 40%
- Introduces self to the patient. Identifies the patient and explains the blood collection procedure before obtaining the specimen. Collects the blood samples using venipuncture, arterial, heelstick and fingerstick techniques. Demonstrates skill in performing phlebotomy procedures and giving specialty care to patients in specialty areas, considering age of patient and appropriately adapts care for age (neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric, etc.)
- Labels all specimens correctly.
- Appropriately transports/sends specimen to lab. May be asked to return carts or kits containing medication to the appropriate location. May enter secured medication room to deliver medication from the tube system or to deliver/stock supplies.
- Maintains a clean work area and collection trays, and restocks designated supplies.
- Follows and monitors Performance Improvement and Patient Safety guidelines as outlined and takes appropriate action as necessary.
