JOB PURPOSE:
Supports the supervision of shift activities and acts as the expert during his or her assigned shift. Duties include daily support of staffing and assignments, providing resource support, supporting preceptor tasks, and fulfilling assigned patient care workload. Serves as a role model and advocates a highly efficient, accountable and collaborative team environment between staff and with physicians. Delivers the highest standards of patient safety and quality of care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Coordinates daily staffing and assignments.
a. Evaluates daily counts, call-ins and priorities to understand staffing level and skill mix needed.
b. Utilizes assignment system to finalize assignments and ensure equitable distribution of work, including appropriate allocation of work to the Lead Therapist.
c. Collaborates with the Supervisor on decisions that may require higher-level approval (i.e., overtime utilization).
d. Reviews and signs Time Omission Logs at the direction of the Supervisor.
e. Ensures staff has assigned equipment/tools at start of shift (i.e., scanners, phones, etc.).
2. Serves as an expert and resource for all clinical areas.
a. Acts as the liaison for patient care needs and identifies / coordinates with appropriate staff member to fulfill identified needs.
b. Provides neonatal care support when needed, such as stabilization of newborns in high-risk deliveries and during cesarean sections.
c. Provides adult care support when needed, such as bronchoscopy assists.
d. Provides rapid response support when needed during hospital codes.
e. Serves as an expert and mentor for staff’s clinical questions and concerns.
f. Reports clinical issues / concerns to the Supervisor in a prompt fashion.
3. Acts as a liaison as needed to address immediate patient safety and quality of care concerns.
a. Supports the Supervisor and staff with addressing daily patient safety issues or concerns by working collaboratively with physicians, staff, patients and families.
b. Reports patient safety issues / concerns to the Supervisor in a prompt fashion.
c. Supports the proper submission of variances if concerns emerge from other areas.
4. Delivers basic clinical care for all adult and neonatal clinical areas.
a. Performs basic patient assessments.
b. Administers medication, such as nebulizers and MDI’s; demonstrates optimal use of scanners.
c. Performs, analyzes, interprets and reports point of care blood gases for all population ages.
d. Ensures basic airway management and clearance for all population ages.
e. Initiates, monitors and manages invasive mechanical ventilation and non-invasive positive pressure ventilation for adult population.
f. Able to set up neonatal equipment with generic settings.
g. Provides respiratory care for newborns in Labor & Delivery.
h. Follows appropriate policies, procedures and protocols.
i. Provides timely, thorough and concise documentation.
5. Delivers advanced clinical care for all adult clinical areas.
a. Performs advanced patient assessments.
b. Inserts, maintains and documents arterial lines.
c. Ensures advanced airway management and clearance for the adult population, such as tracheostomy tube insertion and endotracheal tube change outs.
d. Perform bronchoscopy assists.
e. Proficient in special procedures, including EKG, swallow study assists, V/Q scans, cardioversion, transport ventilation and iNO therapy

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
Requires an Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy Sciences.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Minimum of two years clinical experience in respiratory care. Current BCLS, ACLS and NRP certifications required. Proficient in all patient care settings (i.e., adult ICU, NICU). If limited NICU experience, able to ramp up basic skill set (i.e., delivery support, blood gases, equipment setup) within a defined timeframe.
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:
Is a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC); has and maintains a current licensure as a Respiratory Care Professional in the state of Georgia.
